A powerful new documentary, The General: Vietnam in the Age of To Lam, will be screened for the first time in San Jose at the SJSU Student Union Theater, marking a significant cultural and political moment in conjunction with the annual Black April commemoration.
The screening is presented by the Office of Councilmember Bien Doan, in collaboration with San Jose State University, bringing this important conversation to one of the largest Vietnamese communities in the United States.
A story beyond borders
The film traces the rise of Vietnam’s Communist Party chief, To Lam, who consolidated his position at the top of the country’s leadership during the most recent 14th Party Congress.
As the documentary reveals, the expansion of Vietnam’s security apparatus has not been confined within its borders. Through interviews, testimonies, and investigative reporting, the film sheds light on how asylum seekers, activists, and even insiders who challenge the system continue to face surveillance, harassment, and repression—even after fleeing the country.
It raises a fundamental and uncomfortable question:
What is the true cost of economic prosperity when it is built on political repression?
Voices from within
One of the most compelling aspects of the documentary is its firsthand accounts from human rights defenders and dissidents. Among them is human rights lawyer Dang Dinh Manh, who was forced to seek asylum in the United States in 2023 due to political persecution.
Reflecting on the film, he stated:
“I owe documentary filmmaker Laura Brickman my gratitude for telling the story of our country—an anguished cry from within, conveyed with honesty and depth.”
Many of the individuals featured in the film were once his clients, offering viewers a rare, personal window into the human cost behind political dissent.
A growing international presence
Prior to its San Jose debut, The General: Vietnam in the Age of To Lam has been screened internationally across academic and journalistic venues, including the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand in Bangkok, the University of Oregon, and public discussions in Berlin.
The film has also been presented to Vietnamese diaspora communities in Washington, D.C., and selected independent theaters in California—highlighting its growing global relevance and impact.
A debut with impact
The General: Vietnam in the Age of To Lam marks Laura Brickman’s directorial debut. With over a decade of experience across major media platforms including Politico, BBC, Insider, and 60 Seconds Docs, Brickman brings both journalistic rigor and emotional depth to the film.
The screening in San Jose—home to one of the largest Vietnamese diaspora communities in the United States—adds further significance to the event, especially during Black April, a time dedicated to remembrance, reflection, and the preservation of historical truth.

Một bộ phim tài liệu gây chú ý mang tên The General: Vietnam in the Age of To Lam sẽ được trình chiếu lần đầu tiên tại San Jose, tại rạp SJSU Student Union Theater, nhân dịp tưởng niệm Tháng Tư Đen – một dấu mốc lịch sử quan trọng đối với cộng đồng người Việt hải ngoại.
Buổi chiếu phim do văn phòng Nghị viên Biên Đoàn tổ chức, phối hợp cùng San Jose State University, mang đến một không gian đối thoại quan trọng cho cộng đồng người Việt tại địa phương.
Quyền lực không dừng lại ở biên giới
Bộ phim khắc họa quá trình vươn lên nắm quyền của ông Tô Lâm, người đã củng cố vị trí lãnh đạo tại Đại hội Đảng lần thứ 14 gần đây.
Phim cho thấy sự mở rộng của bộ máy an ninh không chỉ giới hạn trong nước. Thông qua các lời chứng trực tiếp và điều tra báo chí, bộ phim phản ánh thực tế rằng nhiều người tị nạn, nhà hoạt động, và cả những người trong hệ thống khi lên tiếng đã tiếp tục bị theo dõi, gây áp lực và bị bịt tiếng—ngay cả khi đã rời khỏi Việt Nam.
Bộ phim đặt ra một câu hỏi quan trọng:
Cái giá thực sự của tăng trưởng kinh tế là gì, nếu nó được xây dựng trên sự đàn áp?
Những tiếng nói từ bên trong
Một trong những điểm mạnh của bộ phim là những lời kể trực tiếp từ các nhà bảo vệ nhân quyền. Trong đó có luật sư Đặng Đình Mạnh, người đã phải xin tị nạn tại Hoa Kỳ vào năm 2023 vì bị đàn áp chính trị.
Ông chia sẻ:
“Tôi biết ơn nhà làm phim Laura Brickman vì đã kể câu chuyện của đất nước chúng tôi—một tiếng kêu đau đớn từ bên trong, được truyền tải với sự chân thật và chiều sâu.”
Nhiều nhân vật xuất hiện trong phim từng là thân chủ của ông, mang lại góc nhìn rất thật về cái giá của việc lên tiếng.

Trước khi đến San Jose, bộ phim The General: Vietnam in the Age of To Lam đã được trình chiếu tại nhiều địa điểm quốc tế và học thuật, bao gồm Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand tại Bangkok, University of Oregon, cũng như các buổi thảo luận tại Berlin.
