San Jose, CA – April is expected to be one of the busiest periods for OAC/VAC and the office of Councilmember Bien Doan, with a wide range of activities spanning community support, social services, and cultural and historical events of special significance to the Vietnamese diaspora.
Kicking off the month on Thursday, April 2, the office of Councilmember Bien Doan, in collaboration with OAC/VAC, will officially submit the Yellow Flag Emoji proposal to the Unicode Consortium. This marks an important milestone in the ongoing effort to gain recognition for a cultural symbol of the Vietnamese refugee community on a global digital platform. The full proposal, along with the total number of signatures collected, will also be publicly released.
On Friday, April 3 at 11:30 AM, the Councilmember’s office will host a visit to senior residents at Corde Terra Senior Apartments. Lunch will be sponsored by the office, and the Councilmember will be present to personally connect with and spend time with the seniors.
On Saturday, April 4 at 9:00 AM, the monthly flag-raising ceremony will take place at the Vietnamese Heritage Garden, organized by the Vietnamese American Roundtable with sponsorship from the Councilmember’s office. This longstanding tradition helps preserve cultural identity and strengthen community spirit. Later that day at 11:15 AM, a hot and frozen food distribution will continue at Seven Trees Community Center to support families in need.
On Friday, April 17, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the AAWA 2026 Career Seminar will be held at San Jose City Hall, sponsored by the office of Councilmember Bien Doan with support from OAC/VAC. The event aims to provide career guidance and networking opportunities for ESUHSD students.
During the weekend of April 18–19, at the Vesak (Buddha’s Birthday) celebration at Lake Cunningham Park, the Councilmember’s office and OAC/VAC will host two community booths. Volunteers will be on-site assisting attendees with Section 8 housing applications and Medi-Cal enrollment, helping families access essential services.
April 30 will be a particularly meaningful day, featuring three major events. The day will begin with a flag-raising and flag-lowering ceremony at San Jose City Hall, conducted by the Vietnamese Armed Forces Veterans Association and sponsored by the Councilmember’s office. This will be followed by a screening of the documentary “The General, Vietnam in the Age of To Lam” at San Jose State University. The day will conclude with a Black April commemoration organized by the Vietnamese American Roundtable at the Rotary Summit Center, offering the community a moment to reflect on a pivotal chapter in Vietnamese history.
With a full calendar of meaningful activities, April serves not only as a time of remembrance but also as an opportunity to strengthen community ties and expand support services for Vietnamese Americans in San Jose. Representatives from OAC/VAC and the Councilmember’s office welcome any inquiries or support, including sponsorship of meals for volunteers, and encourage community members to reach out directly.

San Jose, CA – Tháng 4, gắn liền với ký ức Tháng Tư Đen của người Việt tại hải ngoại, là thời điểm để tưởng niệm, suy ngẫm và nhìn lại lịch sử. Trong tinh thần đó, nhóm OAC/VAC cùng văn phòng Nghị viên Biên Đoàn sẽ tổ chức và đồng hành trong nhiều sinh hoạt ý nghĩa, vừa phục vụ cộng đồng, vừa góp phần duy trì bản sắc và ký ức chung của người Việt tự do.
Mở đầu là vào ngày thứ Năm, 2 tháng 4, văn phòng Nghị viên Biên Đoàn sẽ chính thức nộp đề xuất Emoji Cờ Vàng lên Unicode Consortium. Đây được xem là một bước tiến quan trọng trong nỗ lực vận động nhằm ghi nhận biểu tượng văn hóa của cộng đồng người Việt tị nạn trên nền tảng kỹ thuật số toàn cầu. Nội dung bản đề xuất cùng tổng số chữ ký đã vận động được trong thời gian qua cũng sẽ được phổ biến đến công chúng.
Vào thứ Sáu, ngày 3 tháng 4 lúc 11:30 sáng, văn phòng Nghị viên, cùng hợp tác với OAC/VAC, sẽ tổ chức buổi thăm viếng các bậc cao niên tại Corde Terra Senior Apartments. Bữa trưa sẽ do văn phòng bảo trợ, và Nghị viên cũng sẽ trực tiếp hiện diện để thăm hỏi, chia sẻ cùng các cụ.
Sáng thứ Bảy, ngày 4 tháng 4 lúc 9 giờ, lễ chào cờ đầu tháng sẽ được tổ chức tại Vườn Truyền Thống Việt do Vietnamese American Roundtable đảm trách, với sự bảo trợ của văn phòng Nghị viên Biên Đoàn. Đây là sinh hoạt mang tính truyền thống, góp phần duy trì bản sắc và tinh thần cộng đồng người Việt tự do. Cũng trong ngày, vào lúc 11:15 trưa, chương trình phát thực phẩm nóng và đông lạnh sẽ tiếp tục diễn ra tại Seven Trees Community Center nhằm hỗ trợ các gia đình có hoàn cảnh khó khăn.
Đến ngày thứ Sáu, 17 tháng 4, từ 8 giờ sáng đến 2 giờ chiều, hội thảo hướng nghiệp AAWA 2026 Career Seminar sẽ được tổ chức tại Tòa Thị Chính San Jose bởi Hội Phụ Nữ Việt Á, dưới sự bảo trợ của văn phòng Nghị viên Biên Đoàn và sự góp sức của nhóm OAC/VAC. Chương trình nhằm tạo cơ hội kết nối và định hướng nghề nghiệp cho học sinh thuộc học khu East Side Union High School.
Trong hai ngày 18 và 19 tháng 4, tại Đại lễ Phật Đản Chung (Vesak) tổ chức ở Lake Cunningham Park, văn phòng Nghị viên Biên Đoàn cùng OAC/VAC sẽ có hai gian hàng phục vụ đồng hương. Các thiện nguyện viên sẽ trực tiếp hỗ trợ điền đơn xin nhà Section 8 và Medi-Cal ngay tại chỗ, giúp nhiều gia đình tiếp cận các chương trình trợ giúp thiết thực.
Đặc biệt, ngày 30 tháng 4 sẽ là điểm nhấn với ba sinh hoạt quan trọng. Mở đầu là lễ chào cờ và rủ cờ tại Tòa Thị Chính San Jose do Liên Quân Binh Chủng đảm trách, dưới sự bảo trợ của văn phòng Nghị viên Biên Đoàn. Tiếp theo là buổi chiếu phim tài liệu “The General, Vietnam in the Age of To Lam” tại San Jose State University. Kết thúc ngày là Lễ Tưởng Niệm Tháng Tư Đen do Vietnamese American Roundtable tổ chức tại Rotary Summit Center, là dịp để cộng đồng cùng nhau tưởng nhớ và suy niệm về một giai đoạn lịch sử đầy biến động.
Với chuỗi sinh hoạt liên tục và đa dạng, tháng 4 không chỉ mang ý nghĩa tưởng niệm mà còn là cơ hội để tăng cường gắn kết, hỗ trợ và phục vụ cộng đồng người Việt tại San Jose.
