A fugitive Bay Area barber has been apprehended in Guatemala after being accused of dozens of sexual assaults in the South Bay region of California.
The suspect, Franklin Enrique Sarceno Orla, 34, formerly of Mountain View, California, was charged by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office with more than 50 counts, including sexual assault, sexual battery and administering an intoxicating agent to commit felony assault.
According to prosecutors, video evidence and forensic testing show that many victims were unconscious or severely intoxicated when the assaults occurred. Some victims were clients of the suspect’s barber business or met him socially for drinks.
Investigators believe the assaults go back to at least 2018, and the suspect fled after his arrest in late 2024, avoiding a court date and the possibility of life in prison.
The arrest in Guatemala came following an extensive international investigation and cooperation between U.S. and Central American law-enforcement agencies. Officials are urging anyone who believes they may have been victimised to contact the Mountain View Police Department and seek medical testing for possible sexually-transmitted diseases.
This case, involving a trusted community professional turning into an alleged serial predator, highlights the importance of vigilance, consent, and reporting in sexual-assault cases—even when the victim may have been intoxicated or asleep.
