Beware: Fake Parking Tickets Popping Up in Oakland

Residents in Oakland are being warned about a growing scam involving fake parking citations being placed on cars in busy neighborhoods.

These phony tickets look almost identical to legitimate city-issued citations. Many of them claim a violation such as “failure to display a parking receipt” and include a QR code that directs victims to a fraudulent payment website.

A small but critical detail makes them convincing — the violation numbers printed on these fake tickets differ from the city’s actual code by only one digit.

Several of these tickets have been found near Broadway, 24th Street, the YMCA, and around Lake Merritt. At least one victim has reported a $74 loss after scanning and paying through the fake link.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Do not scan any QR code unless you are absolutely sure it’s legitimate.
  • The City of Oakland and other parking agencies do not collect payments through QR codes on tickets.
  • Be cautious of 1-800 numbers or urgent payment warnings printed on the citation.
  • Verify the citation through the official City of Oakland website before paying.
  • Watch for repeated or identical information (same plate number, date, or VIN) — this is a common sign of fake tickets.

What Authorities Are Doing

The Oakland Police Department is investigating the scam. Community organizations such as the YMCA of Oakland have already alerted their members about these fake citations.

Officials urge residents to report any suspicious tickets to law enforcement and avoid making payments until verification is complete.
