A California woman has been sentenced in federal court for orchestrating an elaborate decades-long fortune-telling scam that defrauded vulnerable victims of more than $3.5 million, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico.
Doris Deleon, also known as “Sophia” or “Sophie,” admitted to running a fraudulent spiritual-healing operation in which she convinced victims that their money was “cursed” or “possessed.” Deleon instructed victims to hand over cash and valuables so she could “cleanse” them — a process that she falsely promised would restore health, reunite families, or remove bad luck. Instead, she kept the money for herself.
Federal investigators said Deleon operated the scheme for over 20 years, preying on individuals experiencing emotional distress, illness, or family crises. Some victims reported giving her their life savings, believing they would be returned once the “spiritual cleansing” was completed.
At sentencing, prosecutors emphasized the long-term psychological and financial harm caused by her actions, noting that her manipulation “destroyed trust and exploited the deepest fears of vulnerable people.”
Deleon was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and was ordered to pay full restitution to her victims. The court said the sentence reflects the seriousness of her prolonged deception and the need to deter similar schemes nationwide.
Authorities urge the public to remain cautious of anyone requesting money in exchange for supernatural services, emphasizing that such scams are unfortunately common and often underreported.
