The fungus can cause severe infections in the bloodstream, heart, brain, and other organs, and is associated with high mortality rates among vulnerable patients.

Health experts warn that Candida auris is particularly dangerous in healthcare settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities. The fungus can survive on surfaces for weeks and spreads through contact with contaminated medical equipment, shared surfaces, or direct person-to-person contact.
