What Is the Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery?

The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program—commonly known as the “Green Card Lottery”—is an annual U.S. government initiative that makes up to 50,000 immigrant visas available through a random selection process drawn from eligible applicants. It aims to diversify the immigrant population by including people from countries with historically low immigration rates to the United States.

Who Is Eligible?

Country of Birth: Applicants must be born in one of the eligible countries, which are those that have sent fewer than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. in the prior five years. Countries with high recent immigration (e.g., Canada, China, India, Mexico, United Kingdom) are typically excluded.
Education or Work Experience: Applicants must have at least a high school education (or equivalent) or have two years of qualifying work experience within the past five years in a job requiring at least two years of training.

How the Selection Works

The U.S. Department of State administers the program. Visas are distributed among six geographic regions (Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and Oceania), with no single country allowed to receive more than 7% of total visas (about 3,850 visas).

Because not all selected applicants complete the immigration process, over 100,000 entries are typically selected to fill the actual 50,000 visa slots.

Application Process and Costs

Apply Online: Registration is free and must be done through the official Department of State website during the annual entry period—usually October to November.
Selection Notification: Only those chosen are notified, and typically, this occurs around May of the following year.
