Surveillance footage reviewed today shows a dramatic and coordinated smash-and-grab robbery at Kim Hung Jewelry on Aborn Road that took place on Friday at approximately 2:09 p.m. The video reveals a vehicle was driven in reverse into the storefront, shattering the glass front and allowing a dozen masked individuals to storm inside. At least one suspect was armed, and tools such as axes and hammers were used to force open display cases and steal jewelry.
One of the store’s employees—reported to be the 88-year-old owner—was violently shoved to the floor, sustaining cuts from broken glass, and later suffered a stroke. He was hospitalized but has since been stabilized and released.
Damages to the store are estimated between $50,000 and $100,000, though the total value of stolen jewelry has not been disclosed. No arrests have been made, and suspects remain at large.
In response, local business and community leaders, including the owner of Vinh Thanh Jewelry in Grand Century Mall and the Story Road Business Association, have convened an emergency meeting with community members and the San Jose Police Department to address the growing wave of retail smash-and-grab attacks in Northern California.
Councilmember Bien Doan has called for community unity and strengthened protection for Vietnamese-owned businesses.
