Early Results Show AI Can Make San José’s Streets Safer and Cleaner

SAN JOSE, Calif. (September 29, 2025) – The City of San José today announced the early results of its AI-powered Road Safety Conditions Pilot, showing the system can identify potholes with 97% accuracy and detect trash or debris with 88% accuracy.

Building on this success, the City has entered phase two of testing, supported by a $260,000 grant from the Toyota Mobility Foundation. The next phase will enhance accuracy, expand community outreach, and train AI models to detect additional issues such as obstructions in bike lanes and sidewalks.

Launched in 2023, the pilot equips City vehicles with cameras connected to AI technology designed to spot parking violations, illegal dumping, potholes, and lived-in vehicles in real time. The aim is to help City crews respond faster, address problems before they escalate, and reduce safety risks for residents.

Mayor Matt Mahan emphasized the impact of the program:

“The early results are clear — AI can transform how we serve our residents. This pilot has proven that we can identify and fix street-level problems before they become our residents’ problems. By making government more productive, we improve lives and rebuild trust in our institutions.”

City Manager Jennifer Maguire added:

“As the Capital of Silicon Valley, it’s only fitting that San José leads in piloting innovative solutions. We’re building safe and efficient systems that enhance community livability across the city.”

The City is also collaborating with San José State University and other academic partners to expand detection to include construction signs and traffic cones. Meanwhile, privacy remains a priority: the system follows the City’s Digital Privacy and AI policies, automatically blurring faces, addresses, and license plates.

Director of Transportation John Ristow highlighted the benefits:

“If we can spot issues sooner, we can fix them faster. That’s a win for everyone — whether they bike, walk, take transit, or drive.”

Chief Information Officer Khaled Tawfik noted the shift toward proactive service delivery:

“Technology should serve people. This pilot helps us move from reacting to problems toward anticipating them, while also sharing insights with other cities through our GovAI Coalition leadership.”

As part of this initiative, San José is creating the nation’s first open-source AI training database on road safety, allowing cities, researchers, and universities to collaborate and improve AI detection capabilities nationwide.

The announcement also follows the City’s AI Incentive Program, the first city-run grant program in the U.S. supporting early-stage AI companies tackling real-world problems.

Trong khuôn khổ dự án, San José đang xây dựng cơ sở dữ liệu AI mã nguồn mở đầu tiên của quốc gia về an toàn giao thông, để các thành phố, viện nghiên cứu, và trường đại học cùng hợp tác nâng cao khả năng ứng dụng AI.

Thông tin này cũng nối tiếp việc Thành phố công bố Chương trình Khuyến Khích AI, chương trình tài trợ đầu tiên do một thành phố tại Hoa Kỳ tổ chức nhằm hỗ trợ các công ty AI giai đoạn đầu giải quyết các vấn đề thực tiễn.
