San José Awards AI Startup Grants to Build “AI Capital of the South Bay”

The City of San José has awarded grants to four artificial intelligence startups as part of its groundbreaking AI Incentive Grant Program, the first of its kind led by a U.S. city. The initiative aims to strengthen the region’s position as the AI capital of the South Bay, while also supporting solutions that improve daily life for residents.

Four Winners Selected

From nearly 200 applications, four startups were chosen for their innovative approaches:

  • Elythea: Uses voice-AI agents to connect with high-risk pregnant patients earlier, helping improve maternal health outcomes.
  • Metafoodx: Develops smart kitchen AI to reduce food waste and streamline restaurant operations.
  • Clika: Optimizes AI models for low-power edge devices, making AI more energy-efficient and widely accessible.
  • Satlyt: Combines AI with satellite technology to create a decentralized virtual cloud, improving data communication and processing.

Grant Amounts and Support

  • $50,000 each awarded to Elythea, Metafoodx, and Clika.
  • $25,000 awarded to Satlyt.

In addition to funding, winners receive professional services such as legal, real estate, and IT consulting, along with access to industry networks. Startups will also benefit from partnerships with NVIDIA’s Inception program and office hours with J2 Ventures, providing venture capital guidance.

Building the AI Ecosystem

Mayor Matt Mahan emphasized the importance of fostering innovation locally:

“This grant program is funding local startups building businesses that make our city stronger, safer and more vibrant for everyone.”

The city is pairing this grant initiative with its AI Upskilling Program, which trains city employees to use AI responsibly. By 2026, San José plans to upskill more than 1,000 workers (15% of its workforce), preparing staff to leverage AI tools in government services.

This dual approach—supporting local entrepreneurs while training public employees—reflects San José’s vision of becoming a national leader in AI development and application.

  • Clika: Tối ưu hóa mô hình AI để triển khai trên thiết bị tiết kiệm năng lượng, giúp AI dễ tiếp cận và hiệu quả hơn.
  • Satlyt: Kết hợp AI và vệ tinh để xây dựng đám mây ảo phân tán, tăng khả năng xử lý và truyền dữ liệu.

Khoản tài trợ và hỗ trợ kèm theo

  • 50.000 USD mỗi suất cho Elythea, Metafoodx và Clika.
  • 25.000 USD cho Satlyt.

Ngoài tiền tài trợ, các công ty còn nhận được dịch vụ hỗ trợ chuyên nghiệp như tư vấn pháp lý, bất động sản, CNTT, cũng như cơ hội kết nối ngành. Họ sẽ tham gia chương trình NVIDIA Inception và được hướng dẫn từ quỹ đầu tư J2 Ventures.

Xây dựng hệ sinh thái AI
