The City of San José’s Department of Transportation (DOT) says its new enforcement campaign targeting vehicles with expired registration is already producing results — with hundreds of citations and tows issued within the first eight weeks.

In July 2025, San José launched a renewed effort to remove unregistered vehicles from city streets. Officers began by issuing warnings and identifying 2,931 vehicles in violation. By August 18, enforcement escalated — cars with registration expired between six months and one year received $63 citations, while vehicles over a year expired were immediately towed.

The City’s FY 2025-26 budget funded three new parking officers and reassigned three others to focus exclusively on registration enforcement.
This six-officer team — currently half-staffed with three active patrols — verifies license plates through the California DMV and operates primarily around interim housing sites and former OLIVE (Oversized and Lived-In Vehicle Enforcement) areas before expanding citywide.
By 2026, three additional officers will join to expand coverage.

Between August 18 and October 11, officers issued 356 citations and towed 350 vehicles — including one with a registration sticker dating back to April 1999.
Patrols have so far covered 20 percent of city streets, including roads near 10 emergency or bridge housing sites and 18 OLIVE locations.

“Opening up street parking for vehicles that are properly registered helps maintain fairness and safety for everyone,” a DOT spokesperson said.

Removing long-unregistered cars improves parking turnover, neighborhood appearance, and public safety while ensuring state transportation funds — derived from registration fees — continue to support roads, transit, and parking programs.

Residents are reminded to keep registrations current to avoid fines, towing, and storage fees. Renewals can be completed online through the California DMV.

Tháng 7 năm 2025, thành phố San José bắt đầu chiến dịch kiểm tra và xử phạt các xe đậu trên đường mà không gia hạn đăng ký. Giai đoạn đầu, các nhân viên đã ra cảnh báo và ghi nhận 2.931 xe vi phạm.
Kể từ ngày 18 tháng 8, chiến dịch chuyển sang giai đoạn phạt tiền: xe hết hạn từ 6 tháng đến 1 năm bị phạt $63, trong khi xe hết hạn hơn 1 năm sẽ bị kéo ngay lập tức.

Ngân sách tài khóa 2025-2026 bổ sung 3 nhân viên kiểm tra đỗ xe mới và chuyển 3 người khác từ các chương trình tạm ngưng để thành đội 6 người chuyên phụ trách việc kiểm tra đăng ký.
Hiện tại chỉ có 3 nhân viên đang làm việc, ưu tiên tuần tra khu vực gần các điểm nhà ở tạm thời và khu OLIVE (kiểm soát xe lớn và xe ở lưu động) trước khi mở rộng toàn thành phố. Ba nhân viên bổ sung sẽ gia nhập đội vào năm 2026.

Từ ngày 18 tháng 8 đến 11 tháng 10, các nhân viên đã phạt 356 xe và kéo 350 xe — trong đó có một xe đăng ký từ tháng 4 năm 1999!
Các cuộc tuần tra đã bao phủ 20% đường phố toàn thành phố, bao gồm 10 khu nhà ở tạm và cầu nối, cùng 18 địa điểm OLIVE.
