San José, Calif. – January 13, 2026 — In recognition of National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) announced a new partnership with Freedom Insight to expand training that helps frontline workers identify and report potential human trafficking.

The expanded effort comes as Silicon Valley prepares to host several major sporting events in the coming years, including Super Bowl LX, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which are expected to significantly increase travel through the Bay Area.

Through the partnership, SJC will provide integrated, in-depth human trafficking awareness training for airport employees. Freedom Insight has trained more than 40,000 workers across 15 airports in nine states since 2014, making it a national leader in this field. Training at SJC will be delivered in collaboration with Freedom Insight and the South Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking.

Airport personnel—from custodial staff to information desk employees—will learn how to recognize warning signs and properly report suspected trafficking situations. According to national data, 38% of human trafficking victims pass through airports at some point during their exploitation, highlighting the critical role transportation hubs play in prevention.

“Human trafficking prevention requires strong partnerships and consistent action,” said Jennifer Maguire, San José City Manager. “This collaboration expands training, education, and resources that empower employees to respond appropriately and compassionately.”

San José Mayor Matt Mahan emphasized the importance of proactive measures ahead of large-scale events. With high volumes of out-of-state visitors expected during Super Bowl weekend, the City is taking steps to ensure trafficking does not go unnoticed in busy travel environments.

“Airports play a critical role in protecting people and keeping our communities safe,” said Mookie Patel, Director of Aviation at SJC. “This partnership strengthens awareness and collaboration so vulnerable individuals can be connected to help.”

Human trafficking is estimated to be a $150 billion global criminal enterprise, affecting as many as 1.1 million people in the United States. Officials say that even one trained employee recognizing a red flag could make the difference between a victim remaining hidden or finding a pathway to safety.

Nạn buôn người hiện được ước tính là một đường dây tội phạm trị giá 150 tỷ đô la, ảnh hưởng đến khoảng 1,1 triệu người tại Hoa Kỳ. Chỉ cần một nhân viên được huấn luyện đúng cách cũng có thể tạo ra khác biệt giữa việc một nạn nhân tiếp tục bị che giấu hay tìm được con đường an toàn.
