SAN JOSE, Calif. — A San Jose Police Department sergeant was shot and hospitalized Wednesday afternoon following a violent pursuit that began with an armed carjacking in San Jose, according to authorities. The suspect was later killed by police during the confrontation.
The incident started around 2:37 p.m. when a green Corvette was reportedly carjacked in San Jose. Officers located the stolen vehicle using a tracking system, prompting a pursuit that stretched south into Hollister. There, the suspect abandoned the Corvette and, armed with a handgun, exchanged gunfire with responding officers before fleeing on foot.
The suspect then carjacked another vehicle and drove north toward Santa Clara County, firing at law enforcement officers along the way. The multi-agency chase ended in downtown San Jose near Highway 87 and Julian Street, where the suspect engaged in a shootout with San Jose police. During the exchange, a police sergeant was struck and taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in critical but stable condition. The suspect was shot, struck by a patrol vehicle, and pronounced dead at the scene.
Highway 87 was temporarily closed due to the law enforcement activity, and an investigation remains ongoing.
