On the evening of March 19, SAP Center in San José came alive with a special sense of pride as the San Jose Sharks hosted Vietnamese Heritage Night during their game against the Buffalo Sabres. Officially promoted as a celebration of the Vietnamese community in San Jose and beyond, the event was part of the Sharks’ broader heritage and group-night programming for the 2025–26 season.

But for many in attendance, Vietnamese Heritage Night was more than just a themed hockey game. It was a public affirmation of the Vietnamese community’s deep roots in San José and its growing visibility in mainstream civic and cultural life. Families, community leaders, invited guests, and supporters gathered not only to watch hockey, but to witness a night in which Vietnamese identity was honored in one of the Bay Area’s most recognizable public venues.

The evening opened on a memorable note with Victoria Thúy Vy delivering the United States national anthem, setting a proud and elegant tone for the night. Throughout the event, the festive atmosphere was further elevated by a lion dance performance, a familiar and beloved cultural tradition that brought added excitement and color to the arena.

During the first intermission, Santa Clara County Supervisor Betty Duong was invited to ride the Zamboni, circling the rink as the crowd looked on. Then, during the second intermission, San José Councilmember Bien Doan took his turn on the Zamboni and drew special attention as he rode with a bright smile while holding the Yellow Flag with three red stripes.

According to Councilmember Bien Doan, he had originally brought a larger Yellow Flag, but organizers only allowed him to carry a smaller one for safety reasons. He said he chose to carry the flag because he wanted to remind everyone that it remains the symbol of Vietnamese refugees overseas, many of whom now call San José home. That moment, brief as it may have been, resonated strongly with many in attendance.

The night also featured visible community participation beyond the ice. Vietnamese American Roundtable hosted an information booth, and many representatives of Vietnamese community organizations attended as special guests. Their presence reinforced what the evening represented: Vietnamese Heritage Night was not merely a symbolic gesture from a sports franchise, but a reflection of an organized, active, and deeply rooted community whose story continues to shape San José.

For younger generations, the event offered a rare chance to see Vietnamese culture represented confidently in a mainstream public setting. For older generations, especially those who came to the United States as refugees, the sight of community leaders, cultural performances, and the Yellow Flag inside SAP Center carried a meaning that went beyond entertainment. It was about memory, recognition, and belonging.

Vietnamese Heritage Night at SAP Center may have lasted only one evening, but its significance was far greater than the final score of the game. It showed that the Vietnamese community is not standing at the margins of San José’s public life. It is part of the city’s living identity — visible, vibrant, and proud.

Tối ngày 19 tháng 3, SAP Center tại San José đã rộn ràng trong một bầu không khí đầy tự hào khi đội San Jose Sharks tổ chức Vietnamese Heritage Night trong trận đấu với Buffalo Sabres. Theo thông tin chính thức, đây là đêm vinh danh cộng đồng Việt tại San Jose và các vùng lân cận, đồng thời cũng là một phần trong chuỗi các đêm di sản và sinh hoạt cộng đồng của đội Sharks trong mùa giải 2025–2026.

Nhưng đối với rất nhiều người có mặt, Vietnamese Heritage Night không chỉ đơn thuần là một trận hockey có chủ đề. Đó là một sự xác nhận công khai rằng cộng đồng người Việt đã bén rễ sâu trong đời sống San José và ngày càng hiện diện rõ nét trong không gian văn hóa và sinh hoạt chính thống của thành phố. Các gia đình, các vị dân cử, khách mời đặc biệt, đại diện hội đoàn và đồng hương đã đến với nhau không chỉ để xem thể thao, mà còn để chứng kiến một đêm mà bản sắc Việt được tôn vinh ngay tại một địa điểm công cộng nổi bật nhất của vùng Bay Area.

Đêm diễn được mở đầu đầy ấn tượng với phần trình bày quốc ca Hoa Kỳ qua giọng hát của Victoria Thúy Vy, tạo nên một không khí trang trọng nhưng cũng rất tự hào cho toàn bộ chương trình. Xuyên suốt sự kiện, bầu không khí lễ hội còn được hâm nóng thêm bằng màn múa lân, một nét văn hóa quen thuộc và giàu ý nghĩa đối với cộng đồng Việt.

Ở đợt intermission đầu tiên, Giám Sát Viên Betty Dương đã được mời ngồi trên chiếc xe Zamboni chạy vài vòng quanh sân, thu hút sự chú ý của khán giả. Đến đợt intermission thứ hai, nghị viên Biên Đoàn là người xuất hiện trên xe Zamboni với nụ cười rạng rỡ và trên tay là lá cờ vàng ba sọc đỏ.

Theo lời nghị viên Biên Đoàn, ông có mang theo một lá cờ vàng khổ lớn hơn, nhưng vì lý do an toàn nên ban tổ chức chỉ cho phép ông cầm lá cờ nhỏ. Ông cho biết mình cầm lá cờ ấy vì muốn nhắc mọi người rằng đây chính là biểu tượng của người Việt tỵ nạn ở hải ngoại, trong đó phần lớn đang sinh sống tại San José. Dù chỉ diễn ra trong ít phút, khoảnh khắc ấy đã để lại ấn tượng mạnh trong lòng nhiều người tham dự.

Đêm hội cũng không chỉ gói gọn trong những gì diễn ra trên sân băng. Vietnamese American Roundtable có gian hàng hiện diện tại sự kiện, và nhiều đại diện các hội đoàn người Việt cũng tham dự với tư cách khách mời đặc biệt. Sự góp mặt đó cho thấy Vietnamese Heritage Night không chỉ là một cử chỉ mang tính biểu tượng từ một đội thể thao chuyên nghiệp, mà còn phản ánh một cộng đồng người Việt có tổ chức, có sinh hoạt, có chiều sâu và đã góp phần định hình diện mạo của San José suốt nhiều thập niên qua.

Đối với thế hệ trẻ, sự kiện này là một dịp hiếm hoi để thấy văn hóa Việt được hiện diện một cách tự tin trong một không gian công cộng chính thống. Đối với thế hệ đi trước, đặc biệt là những người đến Hoa Kỳ trong thân phận tỵ nạn, hình ảnh các vị dân cử, các tiết mục văn hóa, cùng lá cờ vàng xuất hiện ngay bên trong SAP Center mang một ý nghĩa vượt xa khuôn khổ giải trí.
