San José is celebrating a special new arrival at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo: Twix, a one-year-old male red panda who has joined the zoo family from Zoo Boise as part of the national Red Panda Species Survival Plan.
City Manager Jennifer Maguire shared her excitement, saying Twix brings new energy to Happy Hollow and reflects the same unique and vibrant spirit that characterizes San José. Mayor Matt Mahan added that red pandas are “natural innovators,” and Twix’s story will help families connect with the importance of wildlife conservation.
Twix now resides in the red panda habitat within the Zoo in the Hollow. While he adjusts to his new surroundings, visitors may sometimes spot him indoors in the climate-controlled night house, a quiet refuge that helps him stay comfortable and calm as he settles in.
Born in June 2024 at Idaho Falls Zoo, Twix spent several months at Zoo Boise before the Species Survival Plan determined Happy Hollow as the best long-term placement to support the genetic diversity of the red panda population nationwide.
The Species Survival Plan, overseen by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA)—of which Happy Hollow is an accredited member—works to maintain healthy, sustainable populations of endangered species across accredited zoos.
Zoo Manager Amber Rindy emphasized Happy Hollow’s commitment to conservation through education and support for endangered species, both in zoos and in the wild.
Red pandas are naturally solitary except when raising cubs, so Twix will be the only resident of the habitat for now. However, the behind-the-scenes night house is designed to accommodate a future breeding pair if recommended by the Species Survival Plan.
Visitors can meet Twix at the red panda habitat on any day the zoo is open. During November, Happy Hollow Park & Zoo operates from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays only. Guests are encouraged to check the operating calendar at www.happyhollow.org/visit before visiting.
