A 33-year-old man died Sunday while in custody at the Elmwood Correctional Complex in Santa Clara County, the county sheriff’s office announced. Deputies discovered the man unresponsive at 2:56 p.m. and began CPR until medical responders from Milpitas Fire Department and EMS arrived at about 3:09 p.m. He was pronounced dead at 3:31 p.m.
The sheriff’s office said it is coordinating with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner to investigate the death. Preliminary information indicates there is “no indication of foul play or any suspicious activity leading to the death,” the statement said.
The Elmwood facility houses more than 2,000 inmates in medium- and minimum-security custody and employs over 300 correctional officers. The death comes amid heightened scrutiny of jail safety and oversight issues at the facility.
The county has not released the man’s identity or the charges he faced, only noting that he had been in custody since February in a case originating with San Jose police.
