Santa Clara County is taking a new step to combat organized retail theft, a crime that has left many small businesses vulnerable to smash-and-grab robberies and violent attacks. The District Attorney’s Office announced that it will donate $100,000 to create a security network designed to better protect local merchants.

The funding will allow at least 200 small businesses to connect their security cameras directly with the San Jose Police Department. This will give officers the ability to monitor live video when alarms sound or 911 calls are made. By seeing suspects, getaway vehicles, and incidents in real time, law enforcement can respond faster and more effectively.

Additional preventative measures, such as installing heavy concrete planters in front of storefronts, are also being introduced to stop vehicles from ramming into windows during robberies.

Retail theft has become more than just a financial burden. In one recent San Jose case, thieves crashed a car into a jewelry store, smashed display cases, stole merchandise, and assaulted the 88-year-old store owner. Such crimes have heightened fear among local business owners, many of whom operate on thin margins.

District Attorney Jeff Rosen said the program is part of a broader effort to deter organized criminal groups and strengthen community safety. While dedicated prosecutors and past arrests have made an impact, Rosen emphasized that businesses need more tools to protect themselves on the front lines.

The $100,000 donation comes from settlement funds collected by the District Attorney’s Office from its lawsuit against Google. Officials hope the program will serve as a model for other cities and counties facing similar spikes in retail theft.
