Second Vietnamese History Class of the Hùng Vương Program Reflects on the 1974 Battle of the Paracel Islands Giờ Học Việt Sử lần thứ hai của Chương trình Hùng Vương: Nhìn lại Trận Hải Chiến Hoàng Sa 1974

San José, California – On January 18, 2026, at the Alum Rock Library, the second Vietnamese History Class of the Hùng Vương Program, co-organized by Dân Trí Group and OAC, was held in a serious, open, and distinctly overseas Vietnamese community atmosphere.
The session focused on the 1974 Battle of the Paracel Islands, commemorating the 52nd anniversary of the heroic defense of the Paracel Islands by the Navy of the Republic of Vietnam. More than 30 participants of various ages attended the presentation delivered by Mr. Hoàng Cơ Định, which provided historical context spanning from the 1954 Geneva Accords to 1975, and highlighted the role and sacrifice of the Navy of the Republic of Vietnam in defending national territory against the armed invasion by Communist China.
Following the presentation was an active discussion and Q&A session, during which participants raised thoughtful and substantive questions, reflecting the community’s concern for historical truth and the responsibility of today’s generations to remember and pass down chapters of history that have long been obscured or silenced.
Sharing his reflections after the class, Mr. Linh Cao, a member of OAC, stated:
“I am of Chinese descent and was not very familiar with Vietnamese history. Through classes like this, I’ve learned a great deal about the 1974 Battle of the Paracel Islands and Vietnamese history. The class was very informative and meaningful.”
His remarks underscored that the Vietnamese History Class is not limited to ethnic Vietnamese participants, but serves as an open educational space for individuals from diverse backgrounds who wish to better understand the true history of Vietnam, particularly the era of the Republic of Vietnam.
The program continued with a community meal generously sponsored by Elyse Restaurant, offering an opportunity for families and community members to connect and exchange ideas. The event concluded with a light cultural performance organized by members of OAC, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere characteristic of overseas Vietnamese community gatherings.
At a time when many significant events in Vietnamese history—especially the 1974 Battle of the Paracel Islands—remain inadequately and inaccurately taught to younger generations, the Hùng Vương Vietnamese History Program represents a meaningful effort to preserve historical truth, honor the sacrifices of the Navy of the Republic of Vietnam, and help future generations understand the foundations of freedom that overseas Vietnamese communities continue to cherish today.
Organizers shared that future Vietnamese History Classes will continue to be held on a regular basis, covering a wide range of topics related to Vietnamese history and culture prior to 1975, and they welcome continued participation and support from the community.

San José, California – Ngày 18 tháng 1 năm 2026, tại Thư viện Alum Rock, buổi Giờ Học Việt Sử lần thứ hai thuộc Chương trình Hùng Vương, do nhóm Dân Trí phối hợp cùng OAC tổ chức, đã diễn ra trong không khí nghiêm túc, cởi mở và đậm tinh thần sinh hoạt cộng đồng người Việt hải ngoại.
Buổi học tập trung vào Trận Hải Chiến Hoàng Sa năm 1974, nhân kỷ niệm 52 năm Hải quân Việt Nam Cộng Hòa anh dũng bảo vệ quần đảo Hoàng Sa. Hơn 30 người tham dự, thuộc nhiều lứa tuổi khác nhau, đã theo dõi phần thuyết trình do thầy Hoàng Cơ Định phụ trách. Nội dung trình bày giúp người nghe hiểu rõ hơn bối cảnh lịch sử từ Hiệp định Genève 1954 đến năm 1975, cũng như vai trò và sự hy sinh của Hải quân Việt Nam Cộng Hòa trong việc bảo vệ lãnh thổ quốc gia trước sự xâm chiếm bằng vũ lực của Trung Cộng.
Sau phần trình bày là phần thảo luận và hỏi – đáp sôi nổi, với nhiều câu hỏi sâu sắc thể hiện sự quan tâm và trăn trở của người tham dự đối với sự thật lịch sử, cũng như trách nhiệm của các thế hệ hôm nay trong việc ghi nhớ và truyền lại những trang sử bị che khuất.
Chia sẻ cảm nhận sau buổi học, anh Linh Cao, một thành viên của OAC, cho biết:
“Tôi là người gốc Hoa nên không rành lịch sử Việt Nam. Nhờ những buổi học như thế này, tôi đã hiểu thêm rất nhiều về Trận Hoàng Sa 1974 và lịch sử Việt Nam. Lớp học rất hay và bổ ích.”
Lời chia sẻ cho thấy Giờ Học Việt Sử không chỉ là nơi dành riêng cho người Việt, mà còn là không gian giáo dục mở, giúp những người thuộc nhiều xuất thân khác nhau hiểu rõ hơn về lịch sử chân thực của Việt Nam, đặc biệt là giai đoạn Việt Nam Cộng Hòa.
Chương trình tiếp nối với phần ẩm thực thân mật do nhà hàng Elyse tài trợ, tạo điều kiện để các gia đình và đồng hương giao lưu, trao đổi và kết nối. Buổi sinh hoạt khép lại bằng phần văn nghệ nhẹ nhàng do các anh chị em trong nhóm OAC phụ trách, góp phần tạo nên không khí ấm áp, gần gũi đúng với tinh thần sinh hoạt cộng đồng cuối tuần của người Việt tại hải ngoại.
Trong bối cảnh nhiều sự kiện lịch sử quan trọng của Việt Nam, đặc biệt là Trận Hải Chiến Hoàng Sa 1974, vẫn chưa được giảng dạy đầy đủ và trung thực cho thế hệ trẻ, Giờ Học Việt Sử – Chương trình Hùng Vương được xem là một nỗ lực thiết thực nhằm giữ gìn sự thật lịch sử, tưởng niệm sự hy sinh của Hải quân Việt Nam Cộng Hòa, và giúp thế hệ sau hiểu rõ nguồn gốc tự do mà cộng đồng người Việt hải ngoại đang thừa hưởng hôm nay.
Ban tổ chức cho biết các buổi Giờ Học Việt Sử kế tiếp sẽ tiếp tục được tổ chức định kỳ, với nhiều chủ đề xoay quanh lịch sử và văn hóa Việt Nam trước năm 1975, và mong tiếp tục nhận được sự quan tâm, tham dự và đồng hành của đồng hương.
