Anderson County, South Carolina — A teacher at Starr Elementary School has pleaded guilty to first-degree harassment after admitting he stalked an 11-year-old former student.

According to investigators, 27-year-old Dylan Robert Dukes wrote more than 60 handwritten love letters to the girl, gave her greeting cards, gift cards, photographs, and repeatedly hugged her without consent. The behavior began while she was still in his class and continued even after she moved on to another grade.

Deputies later found photographs of the girl inside Dukes’ desk. They also discovered he had joined the church the girl attended — reportedly to maintain access to her.

Dukes was sentenced to three years in prison, though the sentence was suspended. He will serve five years of probation, must participate in mental-health counseling, surrender his teaching certificate, and comply with a permanent no-contact order forbidding any interaction with the student and her family.

School officials and law enforcement stated that they intervened before the harassment escalated to physical harm.
