These schemes involve phone calls, text messages, and emails falsely claiming that the victim missed jury service and now faces fines or arrest warrants unless immediate payment is made.
Scammers often use fake badge numbers, spoofed phone IDs, and even court logos or photographs to appear legitimate.

  • Court staff will never ask for personal or financial information such as Social Security numbers, bank details, or credit card numbers over the phone.
  • The court does not send jury summons or warnings by email, text, or instant message.
  • If you receive such communication, do not respond. Hang up and report it immediately to your local police department’s fraud unit and the Santa Clara County Jury Services Office.

Scammers exploit fear, urgency, and confusion. They might say:

“You failed to appear for jury duty and must pay a fine now.”

Once a victim panics, the caller pressures them to pay using prepaid cards, wire transfers, or mobile payment apps. These are always signs of a scam.

The Santa Clara Superior Court warns that these criminals are growing more sophisticated—especially targeting immigrant, elderly, and non-English-speaking residents who may hesitate to question an “official” call.

What You Should Do

  1. Never share personal or banking information with unsolicited callers.
  2. Never make payments through phone instructions or electronic gift cards.

“No legitimate court or law enforcement agency will ever call or text demanding payment for missing jury duty,” the Court emphasized.
