Thanks to a watchful apartment resident, a copper theft in progress at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Ohlone-Chynoweth light rail station was stopped last week before it could cause further damage.

The resident noticed suspicious activity near the station and immediately called 9-1-1, demonstrating the importance of the “See Something, Say Something” principle in keeping our community safe.

Sheriff’s Deputies Fierros, Bryant, Nguyen, and Sgt. Evangelho responded swiftly and found the suspect actively stripping insulation from freshly cut copper wire. Authorities later confirmed that nearly 60 feet of copper wire had already been taken, resulting in an estimated $30,000 in damage.

The suspect, identified as Gregory Ortega, 38, of San Jose, was on probation for burglary at the time of the incident. He was arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for grand theft, possession of stolen property, vandalism, and probation violation.

Law enforcement officials commended both the resident and the deputies for their quick actions, emphasizing that community awareness and cooperation play a vital role in crime prevention.

Người dân này đã phát hiện hoạt động đáng ngờ gần trạm và gọi ngay 9-1-1, cho thấy tầm quan trọng của việc “Thấy gì đáng ngờ, hãy báo ngay” trong việc bảo vệ an toàn cho cộng đồng.
