SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Waymo, the self-driving division of Alphabet Inc., announced a major expansion of its fully autonomous “robotaxi” service to Las Vegas, San Diego, and Detroit — marking its largest growth move to date.

Waymo currently operates commercial driverless ride-hailing in Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin. The addition of three more cities means the company will soon cover a wide range of climates and road conditions — from the snow of Detroit to the desert heat of Las Vegas.

The company also plans to introduce a new purpose-built electric vehicle, created in partnership with Chinese automaker Geely, under the brand name Zeekr RT. This model is designed specifically for robotaxi use, aiming to increase efficiency and lower costs compared to the current Jaguar I-PACE fleet.

Regulatory approval remains one of the final steps before launch. Each state and city must certify the service through local transportation safety authorities.

For riders: expanding access to driverless rides could make autonomous travel more common and affordable.
For cities: it raises new policy questions around safety, liability, and job displacement for human drivers.
For the auto industry: it signals a shift from small-scale pilots to large-scale deployment, testing public trust and operational sustainability.

Waymo said its goal is to launch service in the three new cities sometime in 2026, pending successful permitting and continued testing.
