A 37-year-old contractor died after being rescued from an underground gasoline tank at the Costco fuel station on Exposition Parkway near Cal Expo in Sacramento, according to fire officials and local news reports. Crews were called around 10:45 a.m. Monday during a station remodel after the worker lost consciousness while cleaning an empty storage tank. He was hoisted out by rescue teams and taken to a hospital under CPR, where he later died.
Authorities identified the victim as Ashkan (Abbashashemi) Moghaddam, a Berkeley resident employed by Ponder Environmental Services, a third-party contractor brought in to clean the tanks. Investigators said he may have fainted from fumes or suffered a medical emergency. The Sacramento Fire Department noted the worker was not on supplied air and emphasized the need for continuous air monitoring in confined-space operations.
The gas station remains closed during the investigation. Cal/OSHA is the lead agency and could issue citations within six months if violations are found. Officials said the incident posed no danger to the public.
