A Vietnamese-American lawyer who previously worked for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced plans to run for Congress in Minnesota, setting up a potential challenge to incumbent Representative Ilhan Omar.
Julie Le, who immigrated to the United States as a refugee from Vietnam in the early 1990s, said she decided to enter the race after years of working within the federal immigration system. During her career, she served as an attorney representing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in federal court.
Le gained national attention when comments she made during a federal immigration hearing about frustrations within the immigration system were widely reported in national media. She later stated that the experience highlighted the need for broader reform and more accountability in immigration policy.
