San Jose has begun clearing “The Jungle,” one of the city’s largest and most well-known homeless encampments, citing severe environmental and safety concerns.

Located near Coyote Creek, the encampment has long been associated with hazardous living conditions, including pollution, fire risks, and criminal activity. City officials say the cleanup is necessary to restore public safety and protect nearby waterways from contamination.

Crews are removing debris, dismantling makeshift shelters, and offering outreach services to displaced individuals, including temporary shelter options and support programs.

However, the move has reignited debate over how cities should handle large encampments. Advocates for the unhoused argue that without adequate housing alternatives, clearing encampments simply displaces people without solving the problem.

The city has stated that the area will become a permanent no-encampment zone, signaling a stricter enforcement approach moving forward.
